RED RIDING TRILOGY

2/20/2012

British TV series adaptation of David Peace's work, loosely based on the Yorkshire Ripper case. Andrew Garfield stars in the first (and best). Cast includes Sean Bean and Paddy Considine. Dark, violent. Try to view it with subtitles. The flashbacks can be confusing, but it's worth it.

ATTACK THE BLOCK

1/22/2012

Turn the subtitles on for this slightly funny British sci-fi action fantasy. Aliens attack an inner-city gang of teenagers. Music is good, but I didn't fall in love, or like, any of the characters. Cool 'cause it's from the U.K..

TRACKER

12/3/2011

Violent yet beautiful story about a broken old Boer tracking a fugitive seafaring Maori with British troops on their tail. Ray Winstone and Temuera Morrison are perfectly cast in well written roles.

THE KRAYS (1990)

10/27/2011

Anglophiles and gangster film aficionados rejoice; the Brothers Kray, and the women in their violent, criminal lives are finally available for your streaming device.  More old school than modern. Not perfect, but still fascinating.

SUBMARINE

10/12/2011

Quirky, semi-sweet, funny, Welsh coming of age tale with a great cast including Sally Hawkins, Paddy Considine and Noah Taylor.

Slick documentary about the man who helped define the style of a generation, and changed hair forever. Lots of black & white archival footage of the groovy '60s. Fascinating.

THE ARBOR

9/14/2011

Innovative fascinating documentary about British playwright Andrea Dunbar and her family. Brilliant, subtitled: loved it!

BLITZ

8/29/2011

Jason Statham is a bad ass mofo and expert at mumbling pithy lines delivered with withering stares. Love him. Pair him with Paddy Considine as his gay boss / partner, add U.K. flair and style to a police drama which includes a female cop straight out of rehab and have them all chase a fascinating evil psycho cop killer perfectly realized by Aidan Gillen. Loved it.

MY DOG TULIP

8/3/2011

The writing is good, and there's a few laughs, but so much of the narrative is spent in the pursuit of breeding that it becomes pathetic and sad.

Oliver Reed, early '60s British style, children in peril in black & white from Hammer Film Prods.
